Here are some facts about the kilts and all of its accesories for you to read and learn.
The kilt is 8 yards of heavy wool fabric. Orginally the highlanders would use the kilt as dress during the day and use it at night by laying part on the ground and wrapping the rest of it around them. In the cold of winter they would get the kilt wet and wrap it around them and over their heads. By breathing it would make it nice and cozy warm. During rainy weather (which it is frequently here in the highlands) they could put part of the kilt over their heads to keep them warm and dry Each clan (family) has their own tartan. Today it is not so important that you wear your clan tartan as long as you wear it with pride. There are some national tartans worn by many like the Flower of Scotland and the Saltire (our flag).
The sporran (spore an)was used to hold any valuables as the kilt had no pockets. They would hold their shot for the guns and any important bits.
The Prince Charlie jacket and vest is worn for formal occassions like weddings and graduations.
The the ghillie shirt is worn for informal gatherings and evenings out.
The trews were orginally like a heavy tight that was worn under the kilt in winter to keep the legs warm. Today they are trousers that can be warn anywhere.
The the kilt pin helps keep the kilt closed in wind so as not to offend the ladies. Traditionally there is no underwear worn under the kilt. They call it going commando!
The hose beautifully knitted wollen kness sock. Orginally they were made of wool fabric and tied up with flashes.
The sgian dubh (ski an do)black danger, is a small dagger that originally was hidden under the armpit today it is in the hose worn on the right hand side unless you are left handed. Today because of laws against carrying weapons they are made of plastic.
The flashes basically are bits of elastic to hold the hose up. Orginally the were made of braided straw. Nothing worse than baggy socks.
The ghillie shoes orginally when a highlander wore shoes which was not very often they were made of cow or deer hide tied on with strips of leather. Today they are shoes which lace up the legs.
